Hispanic Honor Society chapter inducts two members

Lakeland’s chapter of the Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society inducted two members on Monday, April 9.

Israel Macias and Abigail Juozapaitis were inducted during a ceremony in the Ley Chapel. Also participating in the ceremony were Chi Nu Chapter president Heather Ordonez and members Karley Campbell, Erin Iwanski, Grace Schumacher and William Behrmann. Reina Drake, assistant professor of Spanish, is the group's adviser.

Requirements for induction into Sigma Delta Pi include:

  • Completion of at least three years (18 semester hours) of college-level Spanish or the equivalent, including at least three semester hours of a third-year Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization course.
  • Grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all college-level Spanish courses taken.
  • Class rank in the upper 35 percent of his/her class (for institutions that do not record class rank, a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average is the criterion).
  • Completion of at least three semesters of five quarters of the college course.

The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, established on 1919 at the University of California at Berkeley, is the only honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities.
